Tooth Ache:

If your child has a tooth ache meticulously cleanse the area using a warm salt water rinse, toothbrush and floss.  Do not give your child aspirin.  Acetaminophen can be used as directed for temporary pain relief.  Immediately contact a dentist as soon as possible.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek:

Immediately apply pressure to the bleeding area.  If bleeding continues after 15 minutes of constant pressure, go to the emergency room.

Broken Braces and Wires:

If your child has a broken appliance or loose wire, remove it only if it comes out easily.  If a loose wire or appliance is not causing harm it is usually not an emergency and can wait until the next day.  If there is trauma or discomfort immediately contact your dentist.

Broken Tooth:

If your child breaks his/her tooth collect the tooth fragment/s and gently cleanse the area.  If the broken tooth shows a pink color or bleeding immediately visit your dentist.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth:

If your child’s permanent tooth has been knocked out of his or her mouth (tooth avulsion) immediately place the tooth back in the socket and have the child bite on a piece of gauze or simply place the tooth in a cup of milk.  The child needs to immediately visit his/her dentist, the sooner the tooth can be appropriately replaced and seen by a dentist the better the prognosis.

Knocked Out Primary (Baby) Tooth:

If your child’s primary tooth has been knocked out do not place back in the mouth, this could cause damage to the developing permanent tooth, contact your dentist immediately.  If you are unsure if the tooth is a permanent tooth or a primary tooth, place the tooth in a cup of water and immediately contact your dentist.

Displaced Tooth:

If your child has facial trauma and the tooth is displaced you must immediately contact your dentist.
